Motivation
In Hollywood, actors will often ask of a character “What’s his motivation?” In other words, why is my character a jerk, a fool, a tomboy, an alcoholic, etc. You as an author can’t just say, “because.” You need to get to the heart of a character.
In particular, “evil characters” are often not properly fleshed out. Why is your dark lord a dark lord? Some people are evil because they are selfish. They’re willing to give the whole world pain in order to get a little pleasure. Other people are evil because they were trained to be that way. I remember hating one kid—a bully—as a child, until I heard his father threaten him if he didn’t go pick on the fat kid in our class. Other people are evil simply because they’re too foolish to see the consequences of their actions. Some people slowly slide into the paths of error over years, while others leap in like a frog into water.
You as an author don’t need to show the origins of your characters’ traits, good or evil or otherwise, but you should probably know them in the back of your mind just as a way to get to know your character.
